Is Kentucky Car Insurance Going Up in 2021?

a set of car keys on top of a stack of cash

With each new year comes a good opportunity to review your car insurance premiums. Depending on your policy and insurer, you may not see significant changes in your car insurance in 2021.

Overall, Kentucky has some of the highest car insurance rates with an average of about $1,850 a year for full coverage—approximately $295 higher than the average U.S. full coverage car insurance premiums per year.

This is in part because Kentucky is subject to several weather hazards and natural disasters throughout the year, but especially in summer. Tornadoes, hail, floods and thunderstorms cause heavy risk to drivers throughout the state which can drive up car insurance prices.

2020 saw record-breaking hurricanes along the southern states, including Hurricane Laura that hit parts of Kentucky in August of 2020. As a result, car insurance prices may go up as insurance providers attempt to offset the risk of clients filing more claims.

Keep in mind that your location within Kentucky also matters. Areas like Fort Campbell may not see as high a rate increase as drivers who live closer to the opposite border.

Other Factors Influencing Your Car Insurance Rates

Weather isn’t the only thing influencing your car insurance rates. You could also see changes in your car insurance premiums due to:

Changes with Your Insurer

Sometimes, the new year brings changes with your insurance provider. Systemic changes such as structuring and managing can have an affect on your car insurance rates, which is why it is important to review any surprising changes to your car insurance policy.

Driving Habits and Driving Record

Depending on your occupation and where you live, you may be driving more or less frequently in 2021 than you did in 2020. If you have to go back to the office after almost a year of working from home, for example, you may lose a low mileage discount. On the other hand, you can save money if you start driving less.

Also keep in mind that your driving record will always affect your car insurance rates. If you had an accident in 2020, it will likely still affect your premiums in 2021. Speak with your insurance agent about when accidents or violations are set to drop off your policy.

If you have any questions or concerns about your car insurance rates, speak with an insurance agent and compare quotes among insurers to make sure that you are still getting the best price.
