Choosing Homeowners Insurance In Fort Campbell

Kentucky Home

Geographically, Fort Campbell sits in both Tennessee and Kentucky. As a military base, it maintains a separate jurisdiction from many of the regulations of each state. Therefore, as you plan to move into the area, you might wonder about how to address your insurance needs.

Purchasing homeowners insurance is probably near the top of your to-do list. However, that will mean considering where exactly you plan to live. Once you decide, you will need to buy insurance appropriate to that area. Here's what to think about.

Housing Availability

Military families often have several choices of where they can live when relocating to Fort Campbell. They might choose to live in Tennessee, in Kentucky or in on-base housing.

In Tennessee and Kentucky, new residents can buy or rent homes privately. The military provides housing services to help buyers find the right place. Residents who live on-base can opt to rent privately-managed housing through the Campbell Crossing Lend-Lease Property Company. The company maintains more than 4,000 homes (of different sizes) and community amenities for those who choose to live on-base.

Depending on where you choose to live, your insurance needs will vary. It is critical that you buy the correct coverage.

What Insurance To Buy

Residents who choose to live on-base should consider buying renters insurance. Though you might not own the house you choose, you do own the possessions. You also will assume several liabilities that could cause harm to others (even unintentionally). By buying renters insurance, you can protect your possessions in case such instances as fires, break-ins, water damage and more strike on base. You can also buy liability coverage in case accidents happen in your home that are your fault.

If you choose to live off-base, then you might choose to rent or buy a home. Those who choose to rent a property will need renters insurance for that property. Some landlords even require it.

Those who buy a home will need homeowners insurance. Homeowners insurance reflects the fact that you own the home. It will include coverage for damage to the home's structure because it belongs to you. The policy can additionally include coverage for your possessions and liabilities. Those do not disappear in owned homes, after all.

Tennessee and Kentucky each have different insurance regulations. Your homeowners policy must follow these laws. So, it's important to keep your policy up to date if you ever move across the border. This might mean buying a new policy altogether.

The policy will also have to reflect your own home's unique insurance needs and your investment in it. In fact, if you finance the home, you might have to buy a policy to satisfy lender requirements. Speak to your Augustine Insurance agent for additional guidance in choosing the appropriate coverage.
